Wondering how people are finding lodging at Rio. I'll be representing an NGO and there will be about 8 more people attending as well. Any ideas here on which hotels are providing special rates?
Much appreciated.

Accommodation is a bit of an issue as much has already been booked so its suggested that you make reservations as soon as possible. We can post on here should any opportunities or available accomodation come up, but for now the information we have is probably what you have and it's best to call some of these places and see if they have any availability.

A good share of the hotels in Rio de Janeiro are located on the famous Copacabana beachfront, as well as along the Ipanema beach; many of them overlook the sea. Barra da Tijuca is yet another area whose hotel capacity has grown considerably of late - it is also the closest neighborhood to the main Rio +20 events. The center city ("Centro") also offers hundreds of rooms with quality and close proximity to public transport. Certain hotels in Rio de Janeiro will be reserved for Heads of State or Government and their delegations during the event. As such, travellers are advised to book accommodations as soon as possible. If you are unable to book a hotel room, other accommodation options are also available. Check out the links below for lists of possible accommodations in Rio de Janeiro:

Permalink Reply by Bridget Burns on March 15, 2012 at 11:39am I'd also recommend checking out airbnb to see about apartment availability-- might be the best option and most cost effective. I've used the service before and its very reliable.
Permalink Reply by Deborah Phelan on March 15, 2012 at 11:45am Thanks for tips here. WE are meeting in the SF Bay Area and considering forming a delegation from SF. I will be there representing two different groups independently as well. Apartment service might be a great way to go.
